How to Properly Wrap a Dresser for Safe Moving

Moving a dresser without proper preparation can lead to scratches, dents, and broken drawers. Taking time to wrap it correctly makes a huge difference in keeping your furniture safe during transit. This guide walks you through every step, from gathering supplies to securing everything with plastic wrap. Reliable movers use these same techniques to protect furniture on every job. Follow along to get your dresser ready for a damage-free move.

Arrange Necessary Supplies

Before you start wrapping, gather all your supplies. You'll need moving blankets or furniture pads to protect the dresser's surface from scratches and dents. Grab packing tape to secure the blankets so they don't shift during the move. Bubble wrap or foam padding works well for any delicate or sticking-out parts. Furniture sliders or a dolly will help you move the dresser without hurting yourself. Keep a marker handy to label the wrapped dresser so you can spot it easily when you arrive at your new place.

Clear Out Dresser Contents

Empty everything from your dresser before wrapping it. Go through each drawer one by one, organizing and packing items separately. Take out any hanging clothes and put them in a wardrobe box to avoid wrinkles. Remove fragile or valuable items and pack them separately with extra care. Check any hidden compartments or shelves for stuff you might have missed. Clear off the top of the dresser, too: jewelry, decorations, electronics, all of it. Emptying the dresser lightens the load and keeps your belongings from getting damaged during the move.

Disassemble if Possible

If you can take the dresser apart, do it. Start by removing drawers, shelves, or any detachable pieces. Look for screws, bolts, or other hardware holding things together. Use the right tools to carefully remove these parts, and don't lose any small pieces. Put all the hardware in a labeled bag or container so you can find it later. If there are mirrors or glass elements, remove them separately and wrap them up tightly. Breaking down the dresser makes it smaller and easier to move through doorways and hallways. Keep everything organized for easy reassembly at your new spot.

Protect Drawer Contents

Wrap each drawer's contents in protective materials such as bubble wrap or packing paper. Take out any delicate or valuable items before you start. Clothes can stay in the drawer, but fold them neatly to prevent wrinkles. Line the bottom of each drawer with bubble wrap or packing paper. Wrap fragile items individually with bubble wrap and place them back inside. Fill empty spaces with extra padding so nothing shifts during the move. Cover the top of everything with another layer of protection before closing the drawer. This process keeps your drawer contents safe throughout transit.

Wrap Dresser in Moving Blankets

Wrapping your dresser in moving blankets prevents scratches and damage during the move. Lay a moving blanket flat on the floor and place your dresser in the center. Make sure it's lined up properly. Fold one side of the blanket over the dresser, then fold the opposite side over. Use packing tape or straps to keep the blanket tight and in place. Pay extra attention to the corners and edges, which need the most coverage. Add more blankets if you think it needs extra padding. This protective layer keeps your dresser in good shape during transportation.

Secure With Plastic Wrap

After covering the dresser with moving blankets, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap for extra security. Start at one corner and work your way around the whole piece, overlapping each layer slightly for better protection. Wrap the corners and edges multiple times to stop any shifting during transit. The plastic wrap should fit snugly around the dresser without being too tight. Check for loose spots and reinforce them as needed. Tuck the end of the plastic wrap under a layer or tape it down to hold everything in place. This extra layer protects your dresser from dust, scratches, and bumps during the move.

We began as a small company, me and a few guys, and 1 truck in October of 2020. Since then, we have grown to 19 trucks, a staff 60, and a 40,000-square-foot warehouse. To say I’m blessed with a great team is a vast understatement. During this journey, we have provided living wage jobs to all our employees and poured back into our community in big ways. That is something I’m truly proud of.
