How Long in Advance Should You Book Movers in Columbia, SC?

Two to four weeks ahead is enough for most local moves in Columbia. Summer dates, end of month lease turnovers and university move in weekends need a bit more, maybe four to six weeks. We're one of the top-rated movers in Columbia, SC, and we run off a fleet of 19 company owned trucks with a staff of 60.

That fleet size sets how many jobs go out on any given Saturday, so it's a real limit. Every estimate goes in writing before we hold a date, so crew size and rate are settled long before moving day. Pull up your lease end date and your closing date now, because those two dates decide your window more than anything else.

What Decides How Early You Need to Book in Columbia

The date matters more than the size of the house. A four bedroom home in Forest Acres moving on a Tuesday in November is easier to schedule than a one bedroom apartment moving on the last Saturday in July. Crews and trucks are a fixed number on any given day, and local movers get requests for the popular dates months before the quiet ones.

Crew size is the other big lever. A job that needs four movers and two trucks draws from a much smaller pool of open slots than a job that needs two movers and one truck, and that's before you add a full house, a long carry to the door, or a piece that takes three people to lift.

In a busy month, the configuration you need may only be free on a handful of dates. Booking early is what gets you the crew that actually fits the job, not just the crew that happens to be left.

When Columbia Moving Season Peaks

Demand here follows the calendar pretty closely. Leases turn over on the first of the month, so the last three days of any month are the tightest dates on our board.

May through August is the busy stretch, driven by families moving between school years, the academic calendar at the University of South Carolina and the other Columbia campuses, and PCS orders near Fort Jackson.

October through February is the opposite. Availability opens up, crew configurations are easier to match, and a two week lead time is usually workable. Mid week slots also tend to land on the cheapest days to hire movers, which is kind of a nice bonus. The table below is the working guide our schedulers use when someone calls and asks how soon they need to commit.

Move type and timingRecommended lead timeWhy
Local move, October to February, mid week2 to 3 weeksOpen capacity, most crew sizes available
Local move, May to August or month end4 to 6 weeksPeak demand, Saturdays fill earliest
Apartment move with elevator or dock access3 to 5 weeksBuilding windows have to be reserved too
Long distance move from Columbia6 to 10 weeksRoute planning and delivery windows
Commercial or office relocation6 to 10 weeksAfter hours scheduling, phased departments

Apartment and student moves carry an extra constraint worth naming. Buildings around Five Points, The Vista and the USC campus area hold elevators and loading docks by reservation, and those slots run out before ours do.

Our college moving services are built around those move in windows. August dates near campus need the longest lead time of any local job we handle.

How Far Ahead to Book a Long Distance Move From Columbia

Anything over 150 miles is a long distance move, and the planning is different enough that the lead time roughly doubles. Six to ten weeks is the realistic window. We have run long distance jobs from Columbia to Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, Houston and Miami. Each one involves confirming a delivery window at the far end before the truck is loaded here.

The estimate type is the other reason to start early, so ask whether the number you're given is binding or non-binding and get the answer in writing. A binding estimate holds the price regardless of what the job turns into, which only works if there's been enough time to survey what is actually moving.

Rushed long distance quotes are how people end up with a number at the destination that doesn't match the number they agreed to in Columbia. Seasonal moving cost trends shift long distance availability too, since the same crews that load local jobs are the ones going out of state.

Hold your date early. A written estimate from our Columbia team costs nothing, and it locks the crew size, the truck count, and the arrival window while the date you want is still open.

What Happens If You Need Movers on Short Notice

Short notice moves are possible, and we take them regularly. What changes is how much choice you have. In an off-peak month, a call on Monday for a Thursday job often works. In late July, the same call usually comes back with a weekday slot instead of the Saturday you wanted, or a smaller crew than the job really calls for.

If your timeline is genuinely tight, just say so on the call rather than after the estimate. Knowing the date is fixed lets a scheduler work backward from it.

That opens up configurations that wouldn't otherwise come up, such as a split start time or a larger crew working a shorter day. Weekday and weekend availability differs enough that a bit of flexibility on the day of the week often solves a short-notice problem on its own.

What to Have Ready Before You Call for a Date

The estimate goes faster and comes back more accurate when you have a few things in front of you. Have the room count and rough square footage at both addresses, and know whether you're packing yourself or want the crew to handle it.

Any piece that needs more than two people, a piano, a gun safe, an oversized sectional, should get a mention too. Stairs, elevators, long carries, and parking restrictions at either end matter as well.

Building rules are the thing people forget. If either address is an apartment or a condo, ask the property manager about the move in window, the elevator reservation process, and where a 26 foot truck can park.

Bring those answers to the call. A crew that arrives to a building with no elevator hold and no legal parking spot loses an hour before anything moves, and that hour comes out of your day and your bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions our Columbia schedulers field most often when someone calls to hold a date. Each one comes up before the estimate rather than after it. So they're worth a quick read.

For standard local moves, two to four weeks ahead is the working recommendation. Peak season runs May through August. On those dates and at month end, booking four to six weeks out gives you more schedule flexibility and a better chance at the crew configuration your move needs.

Availability varies by season and schedule. Last minute bookings are often possible during off peak periods. During summer months and end of month dates, availability is much tighter, and a weekday slot is usually easier to secure than a weekend one. Call to check current openings before you commit to a date.

Most three bedroom home moves work well with a three to four person crew and one truck. The right size depends on furniture volume, whether packing is included, and access factors like stairs or a long carry from the truck to the door. We recommend a configuration based on your specific situation during the estimate.

Long distance relocations need more lead time than local jobs because both ends have to be coordinated. Six to ten weeks is a realistic window. That time covers route planning, the delivery window at the destination, and a proper survey of what is moving so the estimate you receive holds.

We've worked with customers whose dates shifted, including closings that moved and leases that changed. Policies can vary by booking type and season. Confirm the current terms for your specific job with our Columbia team when you hold the date.

We began as a small company, me and a few guys, and 1 truck in October of 2020. Since then, we have grown to 19 trucks, a staff 60, and a 40,000-square-foot warehouse. To say I’m blessed with a great team is a vast understatement. During this journey, we have provided living wage jobs to all our employees and poured back into our community in big ways. That is something I’m truly proud of.
